Program/Degree Objective Change within the Smith School

Students who have begun coursework for one degree program and desire to change to a different degree program should discuss options with their academic advisor. It is possible for some graduate students to change degree programs ONE TIME ONLY if their educational or career objective has changed, and if they are in good academic standing. Students who pursue a degree change are responsible for understanding how their scholarships and financial aid may be impacted.

  • Changing between In Person Business Masters and Online Business Masters: Degree changes will not be approved.
  • Changing between In Person Business Masters: Degree changes will be considered. Academic advisors can work with students and the academic departments to determine if credit transfer is possible, depending on the programs. International students on an F-1 or J-1 visa must consult with the International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) before making changes to their program status.
  • Changing between MBA Programs: Degree changes will not be approved, however students may increase or decrease their courseload by working with their advisor.
    • Full-time to Part-time Status: A student admitted to the Full-time MBA program may drop to a Part-time course load (fewer than 9 credits) after completion of the core curriculum, but will still be required to complete their degree within 5 years of their original admission. Such students will still be required to complete all degree requirements in effect at the time of their original admission. International students on an F-1 or J-1 visa must maintain a Full-time course load, and must consult with the International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) before making changes to their student status.
    • Part-time Flex to Full-time Status: If a student admitted to a Flex MBA or Online MBA program wishes to take on a Full-time course load (more than 9 credits), they will need to send a written request to their campus advisor with a list of desired courses and verification that they are employed less than 20 hours per week. Such students are eligible to do so after completion of the core curriculum but will remain admitted to the Flex MBA or Online MBA program. These students will be required to complete all degree requirements in effect in the semester of their original admission. All policies related to the students' original admission (ex. registration eligibility, tuition/fees, graduation requirements, degree completion date) remain in effect.
  • Changing to dual degree MBA/MS or dual degree MBA/MFin: Full-time and Flex MBA students may apply to add an MS or MFin degree through an application process that is managed by the Masters Programs Office every fall semester.
