If you would like to register for online courses, please work with your campus advisor, Justin Thompson, to complete the course request.

If at any time you cannot take a required course during a semester, please contact Justin. The required courses above are required for graduation and your campus advisor will instruct you on how to request the missed course(s) as an 'off-track' student. Off-track students do not have priority to register for required courses and required courses are only offered during certain semesters. Many of the required courses serve as prerequisites for electives and other required courses, so these courses must be completed as soon as possible. Students must complete the program within five years of their admission date.

Fall 2023 Note: Monday classes for September 4, 2023 (Labor Day), are scheduled for Friday, September 1, 2023. Instructor will confirm class meeting. Review class syllabus for details. View the Flex MBA Academic Calendar for additional details.

The ELMS-Canvas course for BUSI 600 is now available and this site has the MBA Workshops and Skill Building Pre-Work you need to be successful in your first semester in the Smith MBA program (and the duration of your program). You will see the graded assignments listed in each of the workshop tabs. The graded assignments must be completed by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, August 18.

Depending on your academic strengths, some modules may challenge you and take more time than others to complete (expect up to 40 hours for the math bootcamp and 30 hours for Excel if you are unfamiliar with the concepts). These modules will build your confidence.

How to Access BUSI 600 Pre-Work:

Upon registering, allow 24 hours to pass before accessing ELMS-Canvas (see Resources below). The ELMS-Canvas course site for BUSI 600 should populate under your courses. Any questions about Pre-Work should be addressed via ELMS-Canvas with Professor Mary Beth Furst directly.

Important Notes:

  • Students must be registered for BUSI 600 (part of track) to access the Pre-Work via ELMS-Canvas.
  • Students who are unable to attend the course meeting dates for BUSI 600 on August 19 and 20 should reach out to their campus advisor, Justin, to be added to a separate ELMS-Canvas course via email.

Books

Students typically order books and coursepacks in August, prior to the start of courses. After registration and closer to the start date of classes, an ELMS-Canvas site will be available for your remaining Fall 2023 semester courses. Most textbook assignments are not posted until August, so please do not worry if you have a course that is listed without a textbook.

Students can check for assigned textbooks and materials by accessing course syallbi on ELMS-Canvas. Syllabi should be published on ELMS-Canvas no later than 2 weeks prior to the first day of class and will list any required course materials.

Coursepacks: Harvard Business School Publishing (HBSP)

Course packs are supplemental materials not published in book form and may include: case studies, news articles and additional readings. Typically course packs are available through Harvard Business School Publishing (HBSP). Instructions on how to purchase a course pack will be provided in the course syllabus.

Important Note:

Seven week courses that meet in the second half of the semester will likely not post syllabi and textbook/course packet information until closer to the class start date. You are also welcome to compare prices through other internet book sellers, but be careful that you are getting the correct book (and edition). Using the ISBN# is highly recommended for this purpose.

ELMS-Canvas

Most Smith School professors utilize Canvas (also known as ELMS-Canvas); through Canvas students can:

  • Receive class announcements and assignments
  • Submit coursework
  • View course syllabi
  • Communicate with professors and classmates

Canvas is available at http://www.elms.umd.edu. Students can log into Canvas with their Directory ID and password. Canvas help can be obtained through the University of Maryland Division of Information Technology at 301-405-1500 or by emailing itsupport@umd.edu(link sends e-mail). It is highly encouraged that students bookmark the Canvas website.

Testudo

Testudo is not only the name of the University of Maryland mascot, but it is also the website (http://www.testudo.umd.edu) for many administrative tasks performed throughout the University. Testudo is part of the Office of the Registrar’s website where students can:

  • Register for classes
  • Check Schedule of Classes and course information
  • Order official transcripts
  • Access unofficial transcripts
  • Apply for graduation and check diploma status
  • Register to vote in the state of Maryland
  • Access Student Financial Services
  • Access Financial Aid
