What does the MBA curriculum require?

For graduation, students are required to complete a total of 54 credit hours - 32 required course credits and 22 elective course credits (incoming Fall 2023 cohorts). Required courses are completed with the student's cohort, that is, all classes are completed as a part of a predetermined "track" of classes at the student's home campus. Required courses are completed during the first and second year of the program. Students can select industry-focused electives but are also able to choose other elective courses in other industry focuses based on career and academic goals.

Where can I find a list of courses and course descriptions?

Within the curriculum page, each required course number is linked to a course description for that course.

When are my classes going to be held?

Required courses are scheduled either on Monday & Wednesday evenings or Tuesday & Thursday evenings, according to the individual student's cohort. All classes begin at 6:25 p.m. and end at 10:00 p.m.

How often do classes meet?

The Fall and Spring semesters are divided into two 7-week terms. Fall is comprised of Term A and B and Spring is Term C and D. Summer semester is divided into two summer terms, Summer I in May - June and Summer II in July and August. During Fall and Spring there are 7 weeks of classes and 1 exam period from Friday - Sunday that concludes each term. Students typically have two classes twice a week. Evening classes are held 6:25 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Please see the Academic Calendar for more details.

I have a work trip or other reason that I need to miss class. Will this be okay?

Due to the fast-paced nature of the courses, students are encouraged to attend each class. However, there are sometimes circumstances when students do need to miss class. Please consult with course instructors in advance if you need to miss class and make sure to understand the instructor's policies and how best to handle your individual circumstance.

What courses do I register for?

During the required course phase, students follow a track of courses. When registering for courses, a track code and respective section number must be entered that will be automatically register for the correct courses for the entire semester. Students do not need to register for individual courses during the required course phase in Fall and Spring semesters.

How can I tell that I successfully registered for classes?

Students can visit Testudo and click the Student Schedule link. All incoming students' schedules should show the Fall 2023 semester required courses upon registration.

Where can I find the academic calendar?

The upcoming academic calendar can be found here.

Are there math resources to help me prepare for the rigorous curriculum?

Yes. Please see the Registration & Pre-Work page for more information.

What is the Pre-Work requirement and when is it due?

"Pre-Work coursework is required for BUSI 600 Fundamentals of Business Decision making and equips students with the fundamental concepts necessary for mastery in the corresponding Smith MBA courses. Performance in this Pre-Work contributes, in part, to a student's grade in the BUSI 600.

Can I receive accommodations for a learning or physical disability?

Students will need to schedule an appointment with Accessibility and Disability Services at the College Park campus to assess needs and determine the appropriate accommodation. To schedule an appointment, please call 301-314-7682.

At what point do students consider dual degree programs?

Students ideally apply for a Business Master's Dual Degree in their first academic year. The dual MBA/MS and MBA/MFin programs are designed to enable students to gain broad management skills and knowledge while developing in-depth understanding of a particular business area. Students admitted to a Dual Degree program work closely with their MBA advisor and Business Master's advisor to create their program of study to meet requirements from both programs. Interested students should be mindful that many Business Master's courses and programs are only offered during the daytime in College Park. Students are encouraged to inform their advisor of their interest in a dual degree program upon starting classes.

Who do I contact for specific program questions?
