Beginning Tableau

Tableau is a widely used data analytics and visualization tool. Examples of Tableau visualizations are available at https://public.tableau.com/en-us/s/gallery.

Expected Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the Tableau interface
  • Understand the difference between dimensions and measures
  • Understand how to use rows, columns, and marks card
  • Connect to data sources
  • Create basic graphs: bar charts, line graphs, tables
  • Create interactive graphs and dashboards in Tableau

Prerequisite: Please view the Getting Started tutorials before the workshop.

Software: Prior to the workshop, you should install the required software and test its operation. Tableau is available at no cost for academic use; visit http://www.tableau.com/academic/students to download the software. You must use your University of Maryland email address to be eligible for the download. Please allow 1-2 business days for your academic license to be approved. Alternatively, Tableau is available on vSmith.
