I received a message stating the course is non-standard.

If you receive a message stating the course is non-standard, hit enter to bypass (All graduate-level courses at the Smith School of Business are non-standard).

I received a message stating there is a time conflict between my courses.

Often this message appears upon registration when a class meets at the same time in two separate terms each semester. If this is the case, please ignore the message. Students also receive a time conflict error when course section information is not included. Otherwise, students should contact their advisor for assistance. Please provide a screenshot of the error so your program advisor can better assist you.

I received a message stating that I need permission from the Department.

This error message may be due to a variety of reasons such as being incorrectly coded in the system, wrong information was entered during the registration session, the student is attempting to register for individual courses rather than using the assigned track code, etc. For specific problems, please contact your advisor and provide a screenshot of the error so they can better assist you.

I received a message stating that I did not meet the credit level requirements.

Credit levels are used as the primary restriction for course registration. If you are blocked from taking a course, please check to make sure that you meet all the prerequisites. Off-track students may run into this problem because their credit totals are often skewed. If this block occurs and you are unable to register for a course that you should be taking, please email your advisor who can determine the problem. Before emailing your advisor, verify that you are eligible for the course you are attempting to add.

What is the MXXX99MB code that appears on my registration?

This is a code used by the Office of the Registrar as the course designation for track assignments within the MBA and Business Master's programs. This code tells the registration system to add all the assigned courses in a particular track to the student’s schedule. This code will appear as a course on your schedule (for registration), but will not receive a grade or credits, nor will it incur a charge. Tuition charges are per credit and grades will be given for individual courses.

Can I register for one track and be on the waitlist for another?

No. If you add and successfully register yourself into a track, you will be dropped from any waitlisted track. You can, however, be on the waitlist for more than one track. This is true only for students where there is a choice in tracks. It is highly recommended that you register on the first day of registration to secure your desired track.

Can I register for one section of a course and be on the waitlist for another section of the same course?

Similar to track waitlists, this is not possible. If you add yourself to a section of an individual course, you will be dropped from any waitlisted sections of the same course. You can, however, be on the waitlist for different sections of the same course.

Will I get into my waitlisted course?

There is a large degree of uncertainty with the waitlist that cannot be avoided. Therefore, it is recommended that you register for an alternate course with the assumption that you will not be admitted from the waitlist. Students may drop the alternate course if they are added from the waitlist. Students who are waitlisted for a required course should add the required course that is available once the semester begins.

Please note that students are highly encouraged to register and make all necessary schedule adjustments before the start of any given semester. This includes, but is not limited to, switching from in-person to online classes and/or decreasing their course credit load for the semester. Students are not guaranteed seats after the Non-Standard Schedule Adjustment Period concludes for the start of Term B, Term D or Summer II courses.

  • Any Term A/B courses with waitlists on Testudo will be removed following the Schedule Adjustment period for Term A.
  • Any Term C/D courses with waitlists on Testudo will be removed following the Schedule Adjustment Period for Term C.
  • Any Summer I/II courses with waitlists on Testudo will be removed following the Schedule Adjustment Period for Summer I.

How does the waitlist check-in work?

Review this video for instructions on the waitlist check-in feature. Starting the first day of classes for the University, students on a waitlist for a course must execute daily waitlist check-ins online to remain on the waitlist.

Can I take two classes which overlap in dates and times?

It is the policy of the Masters Programs Office to not allow students to register for classes which conflict. Students will need to drop one of the conflicting classes. Otherwise, the Masters Programs Office will automatically drop students from one of the courses. Please contact your advisor for questions.

Are Flex MBA Track assignments rolled over from the previous semester?

Track assignments are only valid for one semester at a time. Please reference the Registration Instructions for your campus and admit year for detailed instructions.

Can I register for courses beyond the scheduled load?

  • Full-Time MBA students may register for up to 17 credits in a Fall or Spring semester.
  • Flex MBA students are permitted to register for up to 10 credits in Fall or Spring semester, 4 credits in the Winter Term, and 6 credits in Summer Sessions I and II combined without obtaining permission.
  • Business Master's students are permitted to register for up to 16 credits.

Students wishing to register for more classes beyond their assigned schedule should meet with their advisor.

How do I register for a required course that I missed (or need to repeat)?

Once students have missed required courses, they are considered “off-track” from their program and will not be permitted to register for the missed course, or to repeat a core course, until on-track students have had an opportunity to register. Any off-track students should meet with their advisor to discuss their graduation timeline and course plan and submit a Course Request. Please list the sections of the requested core course in order of preference. On-track students are given priority for these courses in order to remain in their cohorts. Off-track students are important to us, but they often will have to be flexible as their first section choice may not be available. Typically, the decision on these course requests is made two weeks prior to the start of classes.

Can I waive a MBA required course?

After the first semester of the program no further waivers will be considered. All waivers are processed prior to the start of a student's first full semester of their program.

When is the last day I can drop a course for a full refund?

In order to receive a full refund, students must drop their courses before the first day of the term (not the first day of the class). Any course dropped on or after the first day of class is not eligible for a full refund. Please contact your advisor if you have questions about dropping courses.

Will I be charged a different tuition and fee when taking courses on a different campus?

Yes, the tuition and fees vary per program. Students in the Flex MBA program have the same tuition rate as long as they take classes at the other offsite campuses in Baltimore, DC, and Rockville. Learn more about tuition and fees for each campus.
