8/9 - Weekly Email From the Masters Programs Office

Dear incoming Master of Science in Information Systems student,

Orientation is quickly approaching and I look forward to meeting you soon!

Smith Master Student Association (SMSA) and Clubs

As a Smith masters student, you will have the opportunity to participate in many social and community activities. The Smith Master Student Association (SMSA) is the primary student club for specialty masters students; it’s currently led by President Jingnan Yang, a Master of Science in Accounting candidate. Master of Science in Information Systems students will also benefit from activities hosted by the Information Systems Association, Professional Communications Club (MS PCC), and Master Student Learning Club (MSLC). Club activities are shaped by the interests of current students, and you will hear directly from club leaders during orientation.

MPO Events/Disney Leadership Trip

The Masters Program Office (MPO) staff regularly hosts activities for students throughout the year as a way for advisors to connect with students. Some of the events this fall will include karaoke, dinner shows, ice skating, a trip to National Harbor, a community service activity, and more. We are planning to offer students the opportunity to sign up for a trip to Disney World in Orlando, Florida, including participation in a Disney leadership workshop, for early January. The trip will be 5 nights at a Disney hotel and 4 days in the parks. The cost of the trip will be approximately $1,000 per student for a single room and $750 per student for a double room. The exact dates and cost, and other details will be sent to students by the first week of September.

Student Activities Around Campus

Students are encouraged to become involved with the full range of activities offered at the University of Maryland campus. The Stamp Student Union provides an inviting place for students to gather, and many resources specifically for graduate students. The following links offer some opportunities to become involved at the University of Maryland:

  • Thursday, August 17th and Friday, August 18th – students MUST park in Lot 1d. Lot 1d is highlighted in red and Van Munching Hall is highlighted in yellow on the attached map. Please ensure you only park in Lot 1d on these two days, otherwise you may receive a parking citation.
  • Saturday, August 19th through Sunday, August 27th – students may park anywhere in Lot 1.
  • Monday, August 28th and beyond – students may only park in Lot 1 if a campus parking permit has been purchased.
