Credits
3

Understanding the Strategic Management processes of nonprofit and public organizations can be important for MBAs beyond whether you decide to work or volunteer for one someday. Given the size of nonprofit sector, a nonprofit may be future customer, consulting client, or collaborator. Wal-Mart, for example, invests more than $350 million per year in various nonprofit ventures. Serving as a successful leader for a nonprofit or public organization of any kind requires an understanding of the strategic management process and a well-developed and managed strategy is a key to an organization__s performance. This course provides an integrated approach to leadership theories and concepts, research, and modern practices related to strategic planning and execution. Students will gain a deep understanding of how strategy can be effectively developed, implemented, and managed in these organizations. Students will meet a variety of nonprofit and government leaders who serve as guest speakers for the course. Student teams will do field projects in which they consult with and evaluate the strategic management processes of a nonprofit organization. The course will be especially relevant for students who want to work for and/or consult with nonprofit and government organizations. This course is open to all MBAs and graduate students in the UMD School of Public Policy.
