Curriculum

The Smith School's MBA programs have a STEM-designation, highlighting the curriculum's focus on analysis and data-driven methodologies. This designation reflects and acknowledges the degree's significance for those interested in pursuing roles in data analytics and technology-driven industries.

Students are required to complete a total of 54 credits: 26 credits of required courses and 28 credits of elective courses.

The Online MBA Curriculum Guide will be shared this summer and should be utilized for student planning purposes. Curriculum and course numbers are subject to change.

Required Courses — 26 Credits

Students must complete 26 required course credits for graduation. The required courses are listed below. Curriculum and course numbers are subject to change. Students will be provided pertinent curriculum information at Opening Residency.

The required courses emphasize learning fundamental business concepts; critical analytical and problem solving skills; and essential teamwork, leadership, and communication skills. All required courses are 2 credits each.

Elective Courses — 28 Credits

Students must also complete 28 credits of elective courses for graduation. Students can customize their coursework through expanded elective options that align with their interests and goals. They also have the opportunity to take in-person electives at Van Munching Hall in College Park, the UM BioPark Campus in Baltimore, the Universities at Shady Grove Campus in Rockville, and the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC. If a student takes an on-campus class at any point during their program, they will be required to submit their immunization record.

Technology Management Certificate

Students admitted into the Technology Management certificate (in addition to the Online MBA) can choose to replace some MBA electives with technology management track courses to graduate with both their MBA and Certificate in Technology Management. Once admitted, students begin taking Technology Management courses in the Fall of their second year and should plan their coursework with their MBA advisor. See the Graduate Certificate in Technology Management for more information. Students admitted to the Tech Management Certificate will be required to submit their immunization record.

  • A combined Technology Management Certificate and MBA degree is still 54 total credits.
  • All Technology Management courses are offered in-person at the Washington, DC Campus.
