Graduate Assistantships
Graduate Assistantships are part-time positions on campus. Graduate Assistantship (GA) positions at the Smith School for incoming students are considered merit-based and are awarded at the time of admission. Students who are not awarded a GA at the Smith School may apply for a GA throughout the University of Maryland at College Park. UMD eJobs provides one resource for locating GA positions on the College Park campus. Since GA positions are handled independently by each department throughout the university, students are encouraged to contact departments directly.
Tuition Remission for Students Holding GA Positions
Students holding graduate assistantship positions within the University should note that the practice of awarding 5 or 10 credits of tuition remission does not apply to the MBA/MS Programs. Due to differential tuition, Masters students receive a tuition credit that is valued at the prevailing standard in-state per credit rate of $811.90.*
In the Fall and Spring, students on 10-12 hour graduate assistantship positions will receive a tuition credit of approximately $4,059.50 per semester (5 x $811.90) and students on 20 hour GA positions will receive a tuition credit of $8,119 (10 x $811.90).
Graduate Assistants wishing to enroll in the winter will receive a tuition credit of $1,623.80 (2 x $811.90) if they hold a 10-12 hour position and $3,247.60 (4 x $811.90) if they hold a 20 hour position.
All Graduate Assistants will be classified as in-state for tuition purposes.
Fee waivers associated with tuition remission do not apply to Robert H. Smith School of Business fees.
