Required Pre-Skills Assignment for BMSO 778F: Financial Management

BMSO 778F: Financial Management offers an introduction to corporate financial management and is a core course that all MS in Management Studies students complete. The objective of the course is to learn how to model the monetary implications of a firm’s strategic initiatives by outlining the financial concepts and techniques used to evaluate those corporate decisions. Topics include the time value of money, valuation of common securities, construction of discounted cash flow models, capital structure, and the weighted average cost of capital.

“Finance Online Course: Introductory Section” offered by Harvard Business School Publishing (product number 6000-HTM-ENG) is required for all Online MS in Management Studies students to prepare for BMSO 778F. This online course introduces some of the material that will be covered in BMSO 778F, including time value of money, financial ratios, financial forecasting. This online course is estimated to take 8 to 10 hours, depending upon prior familiarity with the material. For students who have never been exposed to finance coursework, the online course could take as long as 20 to 30 hours.

Ten percent (10%) of each student's grade will come from whether or not they have obtained a score of at least 65% on Pre-Work Final Exam 1 by 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 22. (The due date is immediately before the first class, so late submissions will not be accepted and will receive a grade of 0.) While the website considers 75% to be a passing grade, students only need a score of 65%. Students who receive 65% or better will receive full points for this part of the course. Students who receive less than 65% will have course points prorated, based on how close the grade is to 65 (for example, if the score on the pre-work final exam is 50%, the pre-work assignment grade would be 77% (50/65). Do NOT take Post-Test 2).

This pre-work introduces students to some of the material that will be included in BMSO 778F (time value of money, financial ratios, and discounted cash flows). Students do not need to have mastered these concepts before entering the course (which is why a 65% score is sufficient). Instead, students should be familiar with them so that class time can be used towards mastery of the material.

Questions about the BMSO 778F pre-skills assignment as it relates to course content can be directed to Professor Susan White (suwhite@umd.edu).
