6/17 - Weekly Email From the Masters Programs Office

Good Afternoon!

This marks the fourth weekly email brought to you by the MPO. The first weekly email was sent May 27th and we would like to remind you that it is important you catch up on all of the information that has already been sent to incoming students up to this point. Therefore, we ask you to visit Networth and review each email posted for your specific MBA program. Please be sure to carefully review each email for important tasks to complete now and review your Pre-Program Checklist to keep track of upcoming deadlines.

This week we are highlighting MathCamp with a message from Dr. Shreevardhan Lele, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs - MBA Programs. Dr. Lele explains the benefits of attending our three-day optionalMathCamp program that takes place prior to orientation from August 7-9.

Weekly Highlight: MathCamp

To: Entering MBA Students, 2015
From: Dr. Shreevardhan Lele, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs - MBA Programs
Re: Required Pre-skills in Business Math

The Smith MBA program begins with intensely quantitative core courses. In order to ensure that you are able to maximize your learning during this part of the program, it is essential to enter the program with well-developed pre-skills in basic business mathematics.

Business math skills are needed for several core and elective courses in the MBA program. In the early part of the program, core courses such as Managerial Economics, Data Models and Decisions and Financial Management require, and assume of all students, a thorough familiarity with basic math.

If your math skills are either (a) under-developed or (b) have become rusty due to disuse, it is strongly recommended that you attend MathCamp, a 3-day refresher course in math that is specially tailored to the Smith MBA program.

All
details of this program including instructions for registration, a list of
specific topics covered in MathCamp, and a self-scoring
quiz to help you decide whether you should attend or not can be found on
the
MathCamp page on the Incoming Student
Website.

As you embark on your MBA degree, you undoubtedly have several conflicting demands on your time that make it difficult for you to attend MathCamp. However, please note that in the past, many students have belatedly regretted the fact they did not take this pre-skills program before starting their regular coursework.
