MFin Course Waivers

All Master of Finance (MFin) students are required to fulfill all MFin core course requirements. MFin core course requirements follow a strict no waiver policy. Exceptions to this policy are listed below.

The following core courses may be waived if the following conditions are met:

COURSE
WAIVER REQUIREMENT
BUSI 610   Financial Accounting CPA license or department approval; complete this form for waiver consideration: BUSI610 Waiver Form
BUSI 640   Financial Management Successful passing of waiver examination

BUSI 610

Students with a valid CPA license or significant past accounting coursework are eligible to request approval to waive this course. For consideration, students must complete this form: BUSI610 Waiver Form

Waiver decisions are final; they are not subject to appeal or negotiation. If a student is granted a course waiver, that course must be replaced with another course of equal or greater credit hours. Course waivers do not diminish the number of credits required for graduation. If a waiver is granted, please contact your advisor for guidance on replacement credits.

The deadline for submissions is July 31. Prior to the beginning of the Fall Semester is the ONLY opportunity to waive a course while in the program.

BUSI 640

A waiver examination for BUSI 640 is offered to interested incoming students during orientation. This exam is offered only during orientation and will not be provided at any other time. If you do not take the waiver examination during orientation, you will not be able to waive BUSI 640.

The exam is comprehensive of the course material. Students are allowed two hours to complete the exam. Students wishing to take the waiver exam should notify Mary Susan Forsythe in the Masters Programs Office. Exam dates are made available each year to all incoming students together with orientation details.

The Masters Programs Office will provide a copy of a recent course syllabus if requested, but no other information (including a faculty/staff contact to answer questions) will be provided prior to (or during) the exam. Faculty will not be available to discuss the content or results of the examinations. Waiver exams are graded “pass/fail”.

How do I drop a waived course from my track?

Once you receive a decision on your waivers, your advisor will put clearance in the registration drop/add system that will allow you to drop the course(s) from your track. Do not attempt to drop course(s) from your track until you receive a decision, as the system will block the transaction until you have received the proper clearance. You must be in touch with your campus advisor to do this.

What do I take in place of a waived course?

All waived courses must be replaced with an elective. Prerequisite requirements for each elective must still be met before registering for those courses.

If I waive a course, will this reduce the number of credits required to complete the program?

No, permission to waive a course does not reduce the number of credits required to complete the program (MFin students = 30 credits). All waived courses are to be replaced with an elective.
