The Masters Programs Office (MPO) and the Smith Master Student Association (SMSA) have partnered to offer an online online Introduction to SQL Workshop led by Smith School alumni Ravi Pandey.

Zoom login information will be sent to registered attendees via email from SMSA the evening prior to the workshop.

Students may direct questions about this workshop to the MPO academic advisor, or to SMSA at smith-club-smsa@umd.edu.

This workshop is subject to cancellation due to low registration.

Expected Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn how to install Structured Query Language (SQL) for use on personal computer.
  • Learn fundamentals of SQL.
  • Understand various data types in SQL.
  • Learn to create a database and populate tables in SQL.
  • Retrieve complex data using SELECT, FROM, WHERE, GROUP BY, HAVING, ORDER BY.
  • Understand how to join multiple tables to write complex queries.

Prerequisite & Preparation:

  • This class is offered online, and requires a computer and a strong internet connection.
  • Windows users will need Microsoft Windows 8/10.
  • MAC users will need Mac OS 10+.

  • Introduction to SQL
  • Data Types
  • SELECT Statements
  • WHERE vs HAVING
  • GROUP BY
  • Arrange your data
  • JOINS – Inner, Left, Right, Outer
  • Aggregate function (SUM, COUNT, MEAN, MIN, MAX)
