The Smith Master Student Association (SMSA) and MPO have partnered to offer a Tableau Workshop with instructor Brittany Fong. This workshop is only open to current Smith School students, and seats are limited. There is an option to attend online or attend in-person with lunch included.

This workshop is designed for people and teams who are beginners or new to Tableau. 

Expected learning outcomes:

  • Understand the Tableau interface
  • Understand the difference between dimensions and measures
  • Understand how to use rows, columns, and marks card
  • Connect to data sources
  • Create basic graphs: bar charts, line graphs, tables
  • Create interactive graphs and dashboards in Tableau

Foundations of Tableau

  • Connecting to data

  • File formats

  • Basic visualizations: text table, bar chart, line graph, map

Beginner Visualizations

  • Muli-line graphs/year over year, stacked bars, tree map, pie chart

Formatting and presenting visuals

  • Totals

  • Fonts

  • Alignment

  • Shading

  • Sorting

  • Filters

  • Labels

  • Colors

  • Reference lines

  • Tooltips

Creating dashboards

  • Visualizations

  • Titles, text boxes, images
